China bans free plastic shopping bags
"China's government announced it will ban shops from giving out free plastic bags and called on consumers to use baskets and cloth sacks instead to reduce environmental pollution." "The regulation comes only about 15 years after shopkeepers started handing out cheap, flimsy plastic bags to customers. But "white pollution," a reference to the color of many of the bags, has cluttered landfills and become a constant eyesore." I lived in China for more than four years. I am very proud the government is proactive in preserving the enviornment. With narly 3 billion plastic bags used per day, it will unclogg the landfills and reduce the air pollution that goes into manufacturing plastics. Not to mention, it will slightly reduce their dependence on foreign oil.
